Tips for hanging wall decor: The right height & size

Are you ready to give your home a warm, inviting atmosphere but still unsure about the right size, height, or placement of your wall decor? We've gathered the perfect tips for hanging wall decor that will help you bring more coziness into your home. Whether you're looking for a small change or a complete makeover, our tips for hanging photos or wall decor will make your house feel like a real home.

Tip #1: How high should a picture be hung?

Most people tend to hang their pictures too high, making them look small and odd on the wall. Hang your pictures at eye level. For this, align the center of the photo collage or wall decor at eye level. If this is hard to determine, you can use the guideline: 150 cm from the floor to the center of your pictures or collage. This way, you're always right!

An extra tip is to adjust the height according to the function of the room. In the living room where you usually sit, you can hang your photo collage a bit lower so it's at eye level when seated. In a hallway or entryway where people usually stand, keep the standard eye level. This ensures a harmonious feel and wall decor that matches the room's purpose.

Determine the right place for your wall decor

Choosing the right place for your pictures depends on several factors such as the available space, dimensions, wall colors, light, and how you can best combine your photo collage with the rest of your interior.

For instance, if you’ve chosen a small wall for your pictures or collage, a good guideline is to cover about 2/3 of the wall’s width. Sometimes, it may be more or less. Many people opt for a centered arrangement of their photo collage, but for a playful effect, you can choose an asymmetrical arrangement, hanging your wall decor off-center.

Think also about the function of the room and how the pictures fit in. In a living room, a large photo collage can create a cozy atmosphere, while in a bedroom, more calming images might be better.

Additionally, it’s really nice to combine your photos with furniture pieces and other decorations. For example, directly or diagonally above a sideboard or a single chair. We will go into more detail on how to hang photos above your sofa, bed, or in the stairwell.

Hanging photos and light

Hanging photos and light

Ideally, use natural light to accentuate your pictures. Try to avoid hanging your wall decor directly opposite windows to prevent glare. Instead, use diffuse natural light to illuminate your photo collage for the best effect.

Take a look at this image of a photo collage in the bedroom. It is hanging on a wall that is perpendicular to the window (on the right). You can immediately see the shimmer in the Eijffinger panel because the light is coming from the side at an angle. Beautiful, isn’t it?

If natural light isn’t sufficient, consider mood lighting or spotlights to highlight your pictures perfectly. Your cherished photos deserve to be in the spotlight, so make sure they are well-lit!

Foto’s ophangen & lichtinval

Measuring is knowing

How do you choose the perfect size for your photo collage? Again, you can use the earlier mentioned guideline of 2/3 of the wall. An even better tip is to tape the outlines of your decor on the wall. This gives you a good idea of how it will look before you actually order it.

Chances are you’ll want to expand your Modulari collection later, so don’t forget to leave some space for future additions!

Choosing the size of your pictures

Struggling to choose between our XS, S, M, L, or XL sizes? Use newspapers or cardboard templates of different sizes and tape them on the wall. This helps you get a better visual idea of how your photo collage will look on the wall.

Don’t forget to consider the proportions in the room. A too-small wall decor can get lost on a large wall, while a too-large decor can be overwhelming in a small space.

Also consider the function of the room and how the images fit with it. In a living room, a large photo collage can create a cozy atmosphere, while more soothing images might be better suited for a bedroom.

Tip: From experience, we know that customers often choose a size that is too small for their photos. If you’re in doubt between two sizes, always go for the larger size.

Hanging wall decor size

Hanging photos above the sofa

A common mistake is hanging photos too high above the sofa. Again, aim for eye level, or slightly lower, since this is a space where people often sit.

For width, a good rule is to have your decor span 2/3 of the sofa’s length when centered.

For a playful effect, hang your pictures off-center or above the corner of the sofa, creating a connection with the adjacent part of your interior.

Also think about combining different sizes of photos or images. For example, you can hang a large photo by spreading it over multiple shapes in our design studio and combining it with smaller photos to create a dynamic look.

Hanging photos above the bed

Hanging photos above the bed offers more flexibility. Hang your pictures centered above the bed, about 2/3 of the bed’s width, nearly spanning the entire width, or half above/half beside the bed. Ensure the pictures aren’t too high, roughly at eye level or slightly lower.

The bedroom is meant for rest and relaxation, so consider colors and themes that promote this, like soft pastels, neutral tones, or serene nature images. Match your pictures’ colors with the bedding and pillows for a cohesive look.

Beautiful images in the stairwell

Hanging photos in the stairwell can be challenging. You can choose a straight photo collage, but for more creativity, ensure your pictures follow the stair line, with the center of your wall decor at eye level as you walk up and down the stairs.

Tips for hanging wall decor on slanted walls

If you have a slanted wall to decorate, consider hanging decor that follows the wall’s shape. For pictures, you can’t just use a nail. Instead, use adhesive strips and magnets. Our magnetic hanging system is perfect for this!

An asymmetrical arrangement adds dynamism to the space, turning a challenging slanted wall into a gem with the right wall decor.

Tips for hanging wall decor in the bathroom or kitchen

Bathrooms and kitchens might not be the first places you think of for wall decor, but they can be great additions! A photo collage with inspiring images or quotes is a unique idea for bathroom walls that don’t get too wet.

For kitchens, magnetic boards, chalkboards, or our cork panels are practical and fun options. Hang your photo collage above a shelf or worktop to create a nice corner. Add a cork panel and use pushpins for notes or cards.

Hanging photos without drilling

Hanging photos without drilling

One of the best tips for hanging photos is to choose decor that doesn’t require drilling. No more dull drills and dust. And no more unsightly holes when you want to move or replace your photos! Use adhesive hooks or our self-adhesive magnetic hanging system. Ideal for frequently changing photos, living in a rental where drilling isn’t allowed, or just avoiding hassle.

Make a photo collage with adhesive strips and a magnetic hanging system. You can easily adjust the collage layout without damaging the wall.

You can also create a playful photo line using string and clips, which you can easily adjust. This makes changing photos and images much simpler and quicker.

Foto’s ophangen zonder boren

Hanging your photo collage with supplied spacers

Modulari makes it easy to hang your images perfectly. Use the supplied spacers to ensure your hexagon or square elements are always evenly spaced. This gives a sleek and consistent result, without hassle.

For our circles, it’s fun to hang them more playfully. Choose different sizes and hang them creatively on your wall without spacers, letting your creativity flow!

One of the best tips for hanging photos: Choose photos that are easy to switch out

A final tip is to choose photos that are easy to switch out. This allows you to use seasonal or holiday-themed images easily. Regularly swap elements and adjust your photo collage to the season or holidays.

With our magnetic hanging system, you can easily switch elements and keep your interior always up-to-date!
